08/09 Wrap-Up

Wrap-Up

With the last week of classes, we’re coming close to summer and a decent break.  GCC will stay active over the summer, but won’t have as many events most likely.  We’ll try to put together a few meetings over the next few months and will definitely have an online meeting in some form (irc, other…).  There are still projects that will continue in the summer, and I anticipate a lot of progress will be made with them.  One of those is the “Urban Outbreak” (zombie game), and Alfred is still open for a few helpers, especially artists.

CORGS

We’d like to especially thank the Garys from CORGS for inviting us to their first annual CORGS convention.  They were great hosts and the event was a great success.  A lot of vendors were there with great retro gear, games, memorabilia, and more.  Various media establishments were there including the Lantern and NBC4.  GCC will probably be in the CORGS article of the Lantern coming out this week (wed).  We met a lot of great people and hope some of them turn out to be great partnerships/relationships.  The booth next to us were the guys from http://untamedgamer.com.  If you’re unfamiliar with them, they review games and have a great community type setup where you can submit requests for game reviews, comments, and more.

Indie Game Competition Winners

CORGS held an indie game competition at the convention and we submitted the games from the last challenge on behalf of the makers.  The categories were: best retro game, best modern game, and best creative game.  The judges were a few of the vendors/etc including myself and untamedgamer.  Congratulations to the winners!  We’ll arrange to get you your certificates soon.

Best Creative Game: “Particle Game” Aaron and Autumn Ryan
Best Retro Game: “Dodge” – Wei-Cheng Tang
Best Modern Game: “Particle Game” Aaron and Autumn Ryan

Upcoming Events

This week is a pretty exciting week for gamers in Columbus.  First is E3 June 2-4, which will be covered by g4tv and have streaming coverage on their site as well.  The next is the MLG 2009 Pro Circuit’s stop here in Columbus.  June 5-7 in the Columbus Convention Center, will bring in mlg pros from around the country (including Ohio’s Ogre1 & 2) for competitions in WoW, Halo 3, and GoW.   Get a spectator pass which includes an awesome level of access, chances to jump into side competitions, and more for only $20 total for a 3 day package!  Check out the website for details.

The next GCC events will be posted and are still being planned.  The IGDA meetings are in limbo right now along with the game jam.  We’ll keep everyone posted as soon as we know more.  We’re also not sure if we’ll have a final GCC meeting before the end of Spring quarter or not.  These next 2 weeks will be busy for everyone, and once they’re over many leave for home.  Again, we’ll keep everyone posted.

Spring Challenge begins Sunday (or now)

It’ll officially start Sunday morning, though you can start on it now we don’t mind. We’ll have a nice repo for each submission (seperate for the one game and the 7 games). Make sure you add your name (or team’s name) in your first submission so we can create folders inside the main folders for your future submissions.

I threw out some ideas for games in the forums: Link

Happy Spring Break!
PS: Whoops, this post cut out the important Sp. Break Challenge post. Here’s the info: Link

An extra day for all you guys to go back and make some edits to your games. Remember to submit to the repo that I gave on the forum topic.

GCC & ACCAD | End of Wi09

Today Jorge, Pete, Morgan, and I (Jim) met with David Bertram and Maria Palazzi at ACCAD.  David is the systems administrator and handles everything with the ACCAD network, servers, etc.  Maria is the director of ACCAD.  The meeting was about formalizing our relations with ACCAD and clearing up some issues with our server which is located there at ACCAD.  A lot of what we discussed would not be of any interest to any of you except for a few things.  One of which is that we have decided on changing our url address.  Our current address is hard to remember off the top of your head for the first time and thus is a hinderance to marketing our club.  A shorter and more easily remembered url will be better.  This is where you all can give your input.  Head on over to the forums to post any ideas you have for what our new url should be and vote on some of the ones we are primarily looking at (games.osu.edu, gamedev.osu.edu, gameclub.osu.edu, gamecreation.osu.edu, gcc.osu.edu, …).

The end of the quarter is approaching as you all know.  What better way to end winter quarter and bring in spring quarter, than with a GCC contest and development event!  Over spring break we will be holding a few different game development events.  We will have one contest which will begin at the beginning of spring break and end the Saturday at the end of spring break.  The details are not finalized yet but we do know that it will be of similar format to the fall xna contest, except that we are leaning towards leaving the game development platform open.  (not restricted to just xna or other languages).  We do highly recommend using a platform such as Game Maker, Pygame, or Flash.  Start looking around for your teammates and think of features you would want for your game.  We will have a couple themes to choose from as a requirement for the contest just like the fall event.  All of these details and other things will be talked about at our final winter quarter meeting on Wednesday March 16th in the same room Scott Lab 245, and same time of 6:45pm.  We will have some extra food this time for the meeting, most likely including pizza!

Next Meetings

This week we are holding 2 meetings to get a better idea for what days are better for all of you.  Each meeting will be the same information so you will not need to attend both unless you wanted to.  Snacks and drinks as usual.  Dates/times listed below.
