Spring Challenge begins Sunday (or now)

It’ll officially start Sunday morning, though you can start on it now we don’t mind. We’ll have a nice repo for each submission (seperate for the one game and the 7 games). Make sure you add your name (or team’s name) in your first submission so we can create folders inside the main folders for your future submissions.

UPDATE 2: Alrighty! We’re very near the end. How are all your guy’s games looking? I’ll give you guys till midnight on Sunday to submit, anyone who wants to submit earlier be my guest. An extra day for all you guys to go back and make some edits to your games. Remember to submit to the repo that I gave on the forum topic.

GCC & ACCAD | End of Wi09

Today Jorge, Pete, Morgan, and I (Jim) met with David Bertram and Maria Palazzi at ACCAD.  David is the systems administrator and handles everything with the ACCAD network, servers, etc.  Maria is the director of ACCAD.  The meeting was about formalizing our relations with ACCAD and clearing up some issues with our server which is located there at ACCAD.  A lot of what we discussed would not be of any interest to any of you except for a few things.  One of which is that we have decided on changing our url address.  Our current address is hard to remember off the top of your head for the first time and thus is a hinderance to marketing our club.  A shorter and more easily remembered url will be better.  This is where you all can give your input.  Head on over to the forums to post any ideas you have for what our new url should be and vote on some of the ones we are primarily looking at (games.osu.edu, gamedev.osu.edu, gameclub.osu.edu, gamecreation.osu.edu, gcc.osu.edu, …).

The end of the quarter is approaching as you all know.  What better way to end winter quarter and bring in spring quarter, than with a GCC contest and development event!  Over spring break we will be holding a few different game development events.  We will have one contest which will begin at the beginning of spring break and end the Saturday at the end of spring break.  The details are not finalized yet but we do know that it will be of similar format to the fall xna contest, except that we are leaning towards leaving the game development platform open.  (not restricted to just xna or other languages).  We do highly recommend using a platform such as Game Maker, Pygame, or Flash.  Start looking around for your teammates and think of features you would want for your game.  We will have a couple themes to choose from as a requirement for the contest just like the fall event.  All of these details and other things will be talked about at our final winter quarter meeting on Wednesday March 16th in the same room Scott Lab 245, and same time of 6:45pm.  We will have some extra food this time for the meeting, most likely including pizza!

This week we are holding 2 meetings to get a better idea for what days are better for all of you.  Each meeting will be the same information so you will not need to attend both unless you wanted to.  Snacks and drinks as usual.  Dates/times listed below.

IGDA, GDC, & Thurs. Event

This week is a fairly big week for GCC.  Starting off the week, we sent out our first email newsletter.  This will be a weekly newsletter with the coming week’s events posted along with other GCC related news and articles.  We hope this will keep everyone connected and informed.

The next happening this week is an awesome public event we are putting on with Ian Schreiber.  Ian will be coming in to talk about game development jobs and where to start when developing video games.  Since we have a lot of newer members or interested individuals, we hope this presentation will be greatly informative and give you the motivation or comfortability in taking the next step of starting your games.  The event is listed to start at 7:00 pm this Thursday February 12th in Knowlton Hall Auditorium.  There will be free pizza, snacks, and refreshments at the beginning along with a social mingling-meet-n-greet session.  We also hope to have the room earlier to have a quick little bit of a regular GCC meeting.  We hope to see everyone there.

The Game Developer’s Conference 2009 is approaching.  It is being held in San Francisco from March 23rd through the 27th.  It is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door in networking with developers and others.  We highly suggest at least looking into this.  It is however fairly expensive depending on what type of pass you get.  This Wednesday a discount will end at midnight through GDC.  More info here: http://www.gdconf.com/

The International Game Developer’s Association is always something we like to bring up every once in a while.  It is a great organization to become a member of if you are serious about going into the games industry.  Student memberships cost $30, and we are going to be giving out a couple scholarships for our most active member(s).  The igda will be at the GDC in full force since most of the developers there will be members and they are holding various seminars, summits, tutorials, and other sessions. www.igda.org

Our next meeting will be this next week somewhere between Tuesday and Thursday.  We are looking into starting times between 4:00pm and 7:00pm.  Some of these times will depend on availability of the leaders and rooms.
