Ah-ha. I added the code to update the level in the main file, but never updated it in the fix to the second demo file. It should now work... I played through to Level 4.

Fourth time's a charm, eh? (I refrained from posting the third build; triple post bad :P)

Download here:
http://drop.io/bcdefg123/asset/seconddemo-exe-4
Source here:
http://drop.io/bcdefg123/asset/seconddemo-fla-4

Only the latest build is playable online, so any of the above links (be sure it's Demo 2, though) will work.

Also, about saving between the demo and full version... I don't think so, at least, not without tinkering with the location of your saved game, since the full version is named differently. Different releases of the second demo, however, are compatible with each other, I think (if you're downloading it, make sure the new build replaces the old). I don't pretend to know everything about shared objects, but I'm optimistic.

Also a status update: The Falk-Rataan Highway has been finished, and I want to finish Rataan this weekend. That's the second chapter right there.

Hey guys,

First I want to thank Joe for starting this thread, and David for his persistence in talking with various people within the art department to make this happen. I talked with David today, and basically whats going on is we keep being redirected to speak with people higher up the totem pole. As we've been told, the next and final person we need to talk to is the chairman of the art dept. David has scheduled a meeting with him this coming Wed. The situation is looking up though, as everyone who we've talked to so far has gave their blessings, but has referred us to their "boss" just to make sure everyone within the art dept. agrees about this room in Hopkins Hall being available to us.

As far as the concern about this "art room" creating a "rift" between the programmers and artists, like Jim said, and Joe explained perfectly, this new room would NOT be artist exclusive, that was never the idea to begin with, anyone within the GCC is more than welcome to attend these art meetings. The meetings we will have within this room will supplement the standard GCC meetings, not at all in any way take place of them. This new room's sole purpose is to help build a collaborative team of artists for the GCC, something were are very much lacking right now, and something we absolutely need in order to improve workflow on the art side in order to catch up to speed with the work being done on the programming side. ie. (the time it takes to produce all the 3d models, textures, concept art, music, sound fx, all being done as efficient and at the same rate as the programming.)

I do understand the underlying concern from some of the programmers on the issue of this art room: some of you might be concerned that if any type of "art workshop room" would be created it would detract from everyone else's say in how they want the artistic aspects of the game to be ie. (the look and feel of the game, what the characters look like, what the environments are comprised of etc.) I can assure you this room won't create that type of situation, as I feel everyone, artists, programmers alike should have an equal say in what they want the game to "look" as far as the artistic aspects, but at the same time I feel that everyone has an equal right to discuss and decide on the programming aspects of the game and how they will effect the gameplay. These decisions are what should be discussed at the normal GCC meetings, here on the forums, the IRC, and all other online groups we have for that purpose of coming to a consensus on how we all think both the art and programing should happen. Once all this is decided, the programmers go to work, each and every one helping the out with coding, and the artists go to work, each and every one helping each other out with modeling, texturing etc. Once a consensus has been decided for want we want of both the programming and art, both teams go to work, and do what they know how to do, the programmers programming and the artists making art, not in completely separate little cliquey groups, but for the most part as far as this art room is concerned, artists helping artists with anyone who wants to check out what is going on stopping by to do so.

I feel the programmers could benefit from a programming workshop to collaborate programming efforts in the same way, (if you don't have this already) with artists stopping by to check out what is going on in the programming front. The whole idea is everyone is welcome, no matter if it's a art workshop meeting or a programming workshop meeting. But as I know being an artist my self, art is a creative process, you can't just pick up a book, memorize a series of steps and techniques and bust out an amazing 3d model, or texture or a musical score. Artists need a community of other artists to collaborate creative ideas, to critique their work and to learn from watching other artists (as most artists are visual learners) That's why I know that an (art oriented),(but not limited to artists only workshop) is necessary.

I think the beauty of creating a game comes from the programmers, the left brained, logical types of thinkers coming up with awesome ideas for the most efficient and functional code for the game, and on the other hand the artists, the right brained, creative types of people coming up with some amazing art for the game and then seeing the harmony of each of the two types come together to produce a great game. Our differences don't divide us but unite us in this way.

Mirror Lake Tonight

Many of you know that tonight is the famous tradition here at Ohio State to jump into Mirror Lake. We wanted to send a friendly reminder about this tradition as well as to post a few pieces of advice.

Even if you do not wish to jump into the frigid, filthy water, many would advise that you go with some friends to at least see the fun commencing. It is truly an exciting and entertaining spectacle that you should not miss. As long as you have your wits about you, everyone will have a safe and fun night!

If you are jumping in, please remember the safety rules that apply. Mirror Lake is as shallow as 3 feet deep in the short end, but is very deep at the other; So please be careful if you decide to do a wild jump. The bottom of Mirror Lake has all sorts of garbage, glass, and other debris that you could injure yourself on. It is recommended to wear shoes or other footwear that enclose your feet so you do not get nasty infected cuts. If you do have fresh wounds or are ill, it may be advised not to jump into the nasty, dirty waters. Finally, throughout the night, be sure to have your property safe and attended. So many things are lost or stolen during this tradition and many lose cell phones, wallets, keys, and more.

So go out and have a safe, great time in celebration of the greatest rivalry in college football! Go Bucks!

A small handful of bugs are addressed in the reuploaded Demo 2, including a fix related to buying a single room at the inn, fixes related to buying attack-based weapons (which I'm surprised nobody caught), as well as a fix for a piece of code which I programmed in Java instead of Actionscript (Hey, I know I'm not the only one who's done something like that), which might or might not affect the four training battles. It doesn't seem to, though.

Elections Party

As Jorge mentioned, there will not be a meeting this week. Instead we want to announce a party for next week. The party will be celebrating our newly elected officers which we will be announcing there. We will be ordering food: either pizza or subs. The party will probably be on Tuesday Nov. 24th, but will probably be later than usual… like 8:30pm. This is not confirmed yet, but this is looking like the only time that will work for us to make it happen. The occasion will begin the transition period between our current officers to the newly elected officers, until the full change in offices happens on December 16th, 2009.

ESA (Electronic Software Association) – Thursday Nov. 19th @ 7:00pm in the EA building room 170

ESA has set up a presentation for our group this Thursday at 7:00pm in EA170. The ESA is a large organization that works with many of the big name producers and other companies in the video games industry. They have been fighting and exploring many issues that surround video games and especially those that fit in the political realm. We hope you can make it out to hear them speak on these topics. Some of the officers will be meeting with their representatives beforehand to talk about the Ohio Game Developer Summit that is being planned for April 17th, 2010 in Knowlton Hall. We will be asking of their support for the event and we hope to make a great impression on them with a decent attendance.

Ok, I should usually be free for this:

MW after 1:00.
TR after 5:30.
F after 1:00 before 6:00.
Sunday, kinda in general, though the hours for the facilities are somewhat restricted. I don't think anything relevant is open on Saturday, but if we just want to write, design, etc. my schedule is usually somewhat arbitrary on the weekend.

Mmm. So it didn't really take longer than expected. Cool.

First Fantasy Demo 2 is here!

Changes include (but are definitely not limited to): A new city, Falk
All of the first chapter of the full game
Different hit messages for the first boss, and subsequent enemies.
A save system
Weapon shop!
An inn
A new-ish battle system. Listen closely. When you hit 0 HP (or below), that means you hit Critical Mode. When you sustain a hit in Critical Mode, THEN you die.
The ability to name Haruka anything you want.
Other stuff I might be forgetting.

As always, if you see any stuff that isn't right (the save system is probably the most important thing here), tell me about it.

And see how the hit messages may not always be the most entertaining? If you can think of a good one or two, I'll stick your name in the full game credits.

Play online here:

Well this is actually very close to what we are planning to do (the workshops) essentially opening up places where both groups (artists and programmers) can meet and work on things, and create games on the spot. It's good that this is already getting set up and helps towards a goal of mine for the club, going back to its' roots and just create some games and build up the library.

I have class in a few, but I'll elaborate back in the nominations page about what Aaron and I have planned or at least the goals for the club (if we are elected). We're currently working out the room situation for where it would take place. And again, it's good to know that this is already starting to take shape.

I don't think this initiative is separating artists from programmers.

QUOTE: The wording "potentially working with programmers" I think is what got me most worried. /QUOTE

I think this is true that this wording raises a flag, but I don't think it was intentionally chosen to mean how it reads.

I'm very glad Kevin and Joe are setting this up. It should be thought of as a workshop series than a sub-group of GCC. The idea is to allow for anyone to attend (though I wonder how well the login issues will be worked out). I'm looking forward to hearing more about the progress of this effort and can't wait to see it all work out!

If this happens I would enjoy attending these. Learning some of the tricks to modeling n' such from people who have done it for a while sounds beneficial.

If enough people are interested (programmers and artists) rather than segregating the artists; maybe we could just consider these meetings a gcc meeting? The idea of having an artist oriented meeting may even help to bring in more artist which would be nice as well since it seems most meetings are filled with cse students. (that's not necessarily a bad thing, but more diversity I think would lead to more interesting games)

I actually think it's a great idea- and I'm not even an artist! It'd be good for a group of artists (and perhaps even another group of programmers, if we ever want to set something parallel to this up) to meet to learn and practice together- stuff that probably wouldn't be done at the traditional meetings. We're here to learn after all, right?

Well, I know I didn't submit this to the SVN, but I didn't know which app to install and my hard drive is already almost full, so I'll just post a link:

-I called it PumpkinHarvest, took 14 days to make. You have to catch all the pumpkins, and land them in the truck, so they can be delivered for the fall season.

-Pretty simple physics based stuff, got special gametypes for the 4th and 5th levels; also have a highscore implementation. So if you beat all 5 levels, submit your score!

I apologize if this idea seems worrying, I think I need to better explain some things. The wording potentially actually meant if us artists could come up with a consistent and good game idea and we could put together content, programmers and artists would collaborate on a game project. I mentioned in the post and will reiterate that the artists getting together will be an additive, not at all a replacement for the regular meetings. Its important for all members to meet and discuss what they have done together in the meetings, this room will only be an addition to the current meetings. I just want to make that clear so programmers do not feel separated from the artists. Again I sincerely apologize if I gave any notion of wanting to separate.

To be honest, I have great respect for programmers and what the programmers in this group have done. I understand that programming is the basis for games and how they work and play. All that myself and others want to provide is an opportunity for really anybody who wants to learn some of the software we may have access to if we get the room.I mentioned artists creating projects to show as a way to show programmers possible artists they could collaborate with for their newest project. The only way they could show their work is by attending the regular meetings, so this room would not even make sense without the artists going to the meetings.

Trust me, artists are not at all separating from programmers, in fact I invite programmers to come to the room to see what the artists are working on and how that work would be implemented into a programmer's current project. Again, if there are any more questions or comments please post.

I'm a bit worried the fact that you guys are separating yourselves from the programmers though. The club is to make games, but you need both collaboration between the programmers and the artists to make that happen. The wording "potentially working with programmers" I think is what got me most worried.

Meeting up to learn software and increase your skills is great and once we get the workshops that were planned going, then this room would be perfect for it, but keep in mind that it's also important for everyone to still attend the regular meetings so that you can collaborate with everyone, not just artists, on creating games.

Hi this is Joe, and I have been talking with Kevin and other artists about asking the Art and Technology head Ken Rinaldo for access to a computer room. We intend to use this room as a place to learn new software and skills to develop projects that have to do with art in videogames. We need committed individuals who would like to learn and share ideas that will result in projects that show our artistic talent. This will in no way replace our normal meetings, but serve as an additive meeting as well as a time to work on game art projects.

This computer room will allow people to learn, share their ideas and art, and utilize software common in the videogame industry. If us artists really work to develop concepts and appropriate content, we could potentially work with the programmers in the group to create visually expressive games that showcase our art.

So if you want to create digital art for videogames as a group, ask myself and/or Kevin about more details at the next meeting. Post any questions or comments below.

I second both Wei's nomination for president and Aaron's nomination for vice. They are both extremely active members with regular attendance. Each is very hard working, passionate about game development, and passionate about GCC. Wei and Aaron continue to play active roles in the projects they join and both have a record of seeing things through to completion.

I still need to consider the other positions. Jim had mentioned that a club needs two positions to be recognized by OSU: President and Treasurer, and that these must be filled by different people.

Hey guys, first of all I'd like to "third" Wei's nomination for prez. I've noticed he, along with myself and a number of others habitually stay long after meeting times to discuss projects/happenings within the club. (Not that this is required) but it definitely does show genuine concern for keeping the club, our projects and progress on track and in forward momentum. That being said, I would like to see some kind of mission statement, or a brief paragraph highlighting some of Wei's ideas for the GCC this year and any plans he may have for the club as prez.

Also, as far as posters nominating others for positions, I think it would be helpful and informative for others looking to cast their vote if we could write a brief explanation as to why we are nominating a certain individual for a position, rather than leaving us unsure as to why exactly a nominator is choosing one nominee...ie. is it because they are a good communicator? is it because they are persistant? or is it because you think they smell good and have nice hair?? We don't know unless it is explained.

As I've been sick the last week 1/2 I've missed the last two meetings, but I'm sure I've met/made an introduction to everyone the first few meetings this quarter as "the guy interested in the Art Director position" (Kevin Adams) Last quarter I worked as the Art director with Jim as he was acting as both Prez and Art director to take some of the work load off his shoulders. From then until now I've been posting various helpful/inspiring videos, images of my work, and advice for art 3d modeling/animation issues. I plan on becoming even more active and making a lot of improvements and opening doors for our artists in the GCC this year to solidify a streamlined process for the art workflow in game creation, from story boarding to modeling, texturing, animation, post production. I'm working on getting us computer lab hours, so we can have art specific meetings to not only discuss our ideas, but put them to work so we can have a group of artists working together sharing ideas, working together to solve problems etc. This will speed up our art production time for the club and allow less experienced members in any aspect of art learn from the the more experienced to help get us all generally on the same level and streamline our production workflow.

I have to end this sooner than I'd like for now or I'll be late to class but I'll post some images of my work, (some are already posted in several threads) the music, story idea, 3d character for the zombie game. But I have much more to post and will do so later this evening. In conclusion.... I'd appreciate your vote for Art Director! Thanks
