I originally showed this at the last meeting, and was going to wait a while until the second demo was completed next week, but it seems it might take longer than expected, so I think I'll just post it up now.

For those who weren't at the meeting, First Fantasy is what I turned my attention to once it became clear to me that my shooting game (see my 'Actionscript- shooting problem' topic) wasn't going to be that easy to complete. The game is a text based RPG with a (mostly) serious story (if you've ever played a 'Tales Of...' series game and liked the story, that's what I'm going for here), taking a couple jabs at RPG's along the way.

The current demo features one regular battle, one decision that influences the boss battle, and the boss battle itself.

The demo can be found here (click 'Download'):

You can play it online here:
    http://first-fantasy.webs.com/Untitled-1.html
And the source flash file (CS4) can be found here:

The second demo, which will be released in a week of two, will add on the first city, Falk Town (including weapon shop, inn, and four new enemies to fight freely) as well as the save system, and of course, a bit more of the game's plot in addition to other small improvements (the ability to name your partner something other than Haruka for example; I just wanted to cut back on resemblance to actual people, considering the game's story... but you'll find that out later).

Later on, I'll need some testers to help me out with playing through the game every possible way- since one of the things I want to do (and I said this at the meeting) was to have a unique experience depending on your choices throughout the game. But that's far off, though.

Hehe... acting like this will be a completed game this early... I am such a freshman

Sweet! What will be nice is once you have a completed text based story you can start adding in assets to expand the game. Take it from text only, to a dragon warrior I type battle system, then to maybe to something even more advanced with animations or a world map.

Keep up the great work and keep us informed on the progress!

Mmm. So it didn't really take longer than expected. Cool.

First Fantasy Demo 2 is here!

Changes include (but are definitely not limited to): A new city, Falk
All of the first chapter of the full game
Different hit messages for the first boss, and subsequent enemies.
    A save system
    Weapon shop!
    An inn
A new-ish battle system. Listen closely. When you hit 0 HP (or below), that means you hit Critical Mode. When you sustain a hit in Critical Mode, THEN you die.
The ability to name Haruka anything you want.
Other stuff I might be forgetting.

As always, if you see any stuff that isn't right (the save system is probably the most important thing here), tell me about it.

And see how the hit messages may not always be the most entertaining? If you can think of a good one or two, I'll stick your name in the full game credits.

    Play online here:

    Source here (CS4 again):

F'sho. This will be the last demo before the full release. Perhaps in February, I'm thinking.

A small handful of bugs are addressed in the reuploaded Demo 2, including a fix related to buying a single room at the inn, fixes related to buying attack-based weapons (which I'm surprised nobody caught), as well as a fix for a piece of code which I programmed in Java instead of Actionscript (Hey, I know I'm not the only one who's done something like that), which might or might not affect the four training battles. It doesn't seem to, though.

I think the leveling might be screwy? I must have killed...100 bees and trees in training and I'm still only level 2. Will the saves work from one release to the next (If so I may be set for life w/monies )?

Ah-ha. I added the code to update the level in the main file, but never updated it in the fix to the second demo file. It should now work... I played through to Level 4.

Fourth time's a charm, eh? (I refrained from posting the third build; triple post bad :P)

    Download here:

    Source here:

Only the latest build is playable online, so any of the above links (be sure it's Demo 2, though) will work.

Also, about saving between the demo and full version... I don't think so, at least, not without tinkering with the location of your saved game, since the full version is named differently. Different releases of the second demo, however, are compatible with each other, I think (if you're downloading it, make sure the new build replaces the old). I don't pretend to know everything about shared objects, but I'm optimistic.

Also a status update: The Falk-Rataan Highway has been finished, and I want to finish Rataan this weekend. That's the second chapter right there.
